Browns, Rainbows, Cutthroat, Carp ...
Drift Boat, Wading

Why Wyoming?  Visit Wyoming for its rugged beauty and experience one of the last truly wild places.  Wyoming is an internationally acclaimed fly fishing destination.

The North Platte River is a diverse and prolific river that produces not only large quantities of trout, but also huge trout.  The largest trout caught to date (weighed and measured), came from the Gray Reef section.  This brown weighed a whopping 22 pounds.  Rainbows are commonly caught in the five pound to double digit range, but most of the fish average 16 to 22 inches.  If you have not yet had a chance to experience the North Platte River, it should be placed on your “to do list” while it is still not spoiled.  In recent years people that visit and fish the North Platte River have ranked it as their all-time favorite fishing destination.

The Fremont Canyon, Miracle Mile and Gray Reef tail-waters of the North Platte River all contain brown, rainbow and cutthroat trout.  The big rainbows are what these waters are famous for.  The “bows” comprise most of the population, but it's possible to get a Platte River Hat Trick, which are a brown, rainbow and cutthroat trout in the same day.

Our guide staff always strives to make every trip different, depending on the expectations and ability of every individual that step into one of our boats.  We, as a guide service, pride ourselves in taking people who have never held a fly rod and teaching them how to effectively cast and catch fish on their very first trip.  On the other hand, we also love to provide challenges for the more seasoned fly fisherman.  From dry fly fishing, to banging the banks with streamers, the North Platte River definitely has some tackle busting trout for you to pit your angling skills against.  So from the seasoned pro to the total beginner, a guided trip with Wyoming Fly Fishing is your fast track to the frustration-free fishing experience you have been hoping to find!

Our experienced and highly skilled guide staff will work extremely hard to not only put you on fish but keep you on fish all day.  They will back-row the best runs 5 or 6 times and push you through the less productive waters, drastically increasing your hook-ups.  They will constantly assess the conditions of the river and adjust your flies and techniques accordingly.

For a bonus and truly unique fishing outing ….. Carp on the Fly

Carp Fly Fishing (the mirror, common and grass carp) is a hot subject right now and a under utilized resource for fly fishermen.  In fact, fly fishing for carp is expected to be the fastest growing part of the sport of fly fishing over the next ten years.  Carp will put up one hell of a fight and can take you in to your backing on multiple times.  Sometimes hard to fool and elusive, carp angling is great sport.  The skills required are similar to what is needed to be successful on saltwater bonefish flats.  It is a great way to learn how to fish the flats of the world, sight cast to fish, and learn how to play and land big fish.  Long accurate casts, good eye for movement, soft presentation are all ingredients that make the carp a great fly-fishing target.

In 2004 the Platte River Fly Shop obtained a Scout flats boat designed by Stu Apte, world famous flats guide in Florida.  We guide for carp on the flats of Wyoming's reservoirs.  We pole our boat over prime habitat in the hunt for groups of feeding carp and use patterns that are crossovers from bonefish styles used in saltwater and sometimes even dry flies.  Color variations are adapted to our resident color themes and the gear used is very similar to equipment designed for the flats.  What do you need?  A quality disc drag reel with 100+ yards of 20 lb backing, 6 to 8 weight rod with good backbone, a good slick floating line, 9 to 12 foot leaders in 2x tippet and a selection of Platte River Fly Shop carp flies.  We can supply an outfit for you if you are new to the game.

Gray Reef and Casper Lodging Options … At Wyoming Fly Fishing we believe in customizing every trip to meet the expectations of you, the angler.  There is a reason why the majority of our clients are return clients.  First and foremost, it is because we are the premiere operation guiding the best tail-water fishery in the United States.  But also, it is because we like to give our guests options.

If you would like to stay right on the river and have private wade fishing access, Ruth will be your host at the Red Butte Ranch.  With our private boat ramp, we can even float right to your cottage on the water. After your day on the water, you will arrive just in time to catch the sunset or some dry fly action, with the red bluffs of Bessemer Bend above you.

If it is the mountain lodge setting you prefer, our partners at Sun Burst Lodge would love to accommodate you.  The lodge is one of the most beautiful lodges in all of Wyoming.  Nancy will be your host and she will take great care of you.  You can relax in the hot tub and soak your sore arm (from catching all those big fish), while enjoying the beautiful mountain vistas.

Captain Mark Boname - Casper, Wyoming
Captain Mark Boname is an accomplished worldwide angler and has been fly fishing for 38 years. He owns the Platte River Fly Shop and has appeared on many outdoor programs like ESPN, PBS and Columbia Country. He has hosted many saltwater trips to destinations like Canada, Belize, Baja, Bahamas, Laguna Madre and Costa Rica.

Mark is an innovative fly tier and many of his patterns are produced and distributed by Stone Creek Limited throughout the United States. His flies have appeared in both books and articles and are well known throughout the Rocky Mountains for both trout and carp.

Mark grew up mainly on the east coast both in the New England area and east coast of Florida fishing for stripers, blues, sea trout, redfish, snook, tarpon and largemouth bass. His passion for fishing as young boy influenced his decision to obtain a B.S. degree in fisheries biology which he completed at the University Of Wyoming. After graduating, he worked in the range department for the U.S. Forest Service for seven years.

In 1987, he started guiding on the North Platte River in his spare time eventually opening the Platte River Fly Shop in 1994. He has now guided for over 20 years on the Gray Reef section of the North Platte River and is one of the most knowledgeable authorities on this tail water.

His recent, passion for chasing carp over the last ten years has led him to not only obtain a saltwater flats boat, but also his U.S. Coast Guard approved Inland Masters Captains license. You will now find Mark during the summer, on Wyoming’s lakes and reservoirs guiding and chasing the "Golden Ghost".

Ryan Anderson - Casper, Wyoming
Ryan Anderson has been guiding for 13 years, 2 seasons in Alaska as a fly out fly fishing guide and 11 seasons here on the North Platte. Ryan has fished all over the world but truly loves his home water in Wyoming.  He is a Casper native that grew up learning how to cast (in the wind) from his father and grandfather. He had a fly rod in his hand at the age of 5. By 12 he was Dennis the Menace but armed with a fly rod instead of a sling shot. The trout in the small mountain streams around Casper didn't stand a chance against this little "trout punk". Now 30, Ryan is the new owner of the guide service. His enthusiasm brings new energy to the business, and he has been working hard to put together the best guide staff. Ryan enjoys the outdoors, loves to be on the river and can always have a good time. As he puts it, "I am lucky because I have been able to combine my passion with my livelihood. I knew what I wanted to do from a very young age, I wanted to fly fish. Guiding someone into a big trout, and netting it, is the closest thing I've found to fishing myself. For me it has the same excitement, same adrenaline, everything. I love this Job!" Some one asked Ryan once what he would be if he wasn’t a fly fishing guide and he said “screwed”.

Greg Mueller - Glenrock, Wyoming
Fly fishing is not a hobby for me – it is a way of life. I love every aspect of this wonderful sport, the river, the fish, and the feeling of peace. I spend around 150 days on the river yearly and I am as excited every time I hit the river as it was the first time. Greg is an experienced North Platte guide with more than 11 years of guiding experience under his wading belt. He has been floating the North Platte for more than 14 years and knows the river very well.

Kray Lutz - Glenrock, Wyoming
Guiding is my life, fly fishing is my passion, and it’s that simple.  I am a Wyoming native and have worked at the Platte River Fly Shop since I was 12 years old, where most refer to me as "Krayfish".  I have been guiding professionally for 5 years on the North Platte and couldn't imagine ever doing anything else.  I've been a fly fisherman as long as I've been walking.  Nothing gets me going like pulling up to the river with old friends or new ones and knowing that one of the greatest days of fishing they will ever experience is about to unfold.   I am very privileged to have such an amazing life style and wouldn't trade it for anything.  On the water I've been told, "You're the most enthusiastic guide I've ever fished with", often being just as excited as the client when a fish is hooked. But I can't help myself it's what I live for.   I consider myself extremely fortunate to be guiding with such an awesome staff here at P.R.F.S. ~ "I look forward to meeting you and rowing you to an unforgettable day on the water.".

Garrett Rogers - Casper, Wyoming
Fly Fishing for a living is something my high school guidance counselor never mentioned. If she had, I would have probably my books were I stood and threw a dart at a map of the western United States. If I were lucky that dart would have landed on Casper Wyoming. I found my way here in 2001 through other channels, but fell in love with a river, a sport, and a way of life. I've spent the majority of my free time the last eight years finding trout, and a few other "non-target" species in the rivers of Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Colorado. I've been lucky enough to make a living at it for the last five years with Platte River Fly Shop. I'll spare you all the dull personal info for now; come give us a try and we'll talk fishing. That's what it's all about anyway!

Thomas Shannor - Casper, Wyoming
I was born and raised in Casper, Wyoming, and I grew up fly fishing the North Platte River. Currently I am living in Greeley, Colorado, studying Business, but I come home on weekends and for the summer ... and would love to spend a day with you on the North Platte catching monster trout and having a great time in the Wyoming outdoors.

Mickey Brockman - Jackson Hole, Wyoming
I live, work, and play in Wyoming. In the summers I spend almost all my time on the river working as a fly fishing guide, and in the winters I'm on the mountain. It's the perfect combination.

Josh Grube - Casper, Wyoming
I was born, rod in hand, in a small town in Louisiana, where bass and bluegill fishing unleashed the beginnings of a way of life. Soon it was walleye and perch fishing in Canada, largemouth in the Midwest, salmon fishing in Alaska, and fly fishing every stream that crossed my path. But about 7 years ago, somewhere between fishing the notorious Snake River and secluded Deer Creek, grew a passion for netting the legendary trout of Wyoming. Needless to say, this is a dream job for me. I just never imagined that guiding a client to trophy trout could be as enjoyable as landing one for myself.

Derek Hutton - Victor, Idaho
Derek was born in East Tennessee near Great Smoky Mountain National Park. He attended prep school in Deerfield, MA and graduated from Washington & Lee University in 1993 with a degree in geology. A geology field course first brought Derek to the Tetons and Yellowstone National Park in 1992. The next summer he returned with his father to fly fish Yellowstone National Park, Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming. He returned often to fish and ski and in 2005 decided to turn his avocations into his full time professions. In the winter Derek can be found enjoying the heavy snowfall and deep powder at Grand Targhee Resort in Alta, Wyoming teaching alpine skiing. Derek is passionate about spending as much time as he can on the rivers and in the mountains. He would love to guide you into a Cutthroat, maybe even a Rainbow or a Brown. We think you will truly enjoy your time on the river with Derek.

Adam Sarvey - Casper, Wyoming
Adam was born and raised in Casper, Wy, grew up fly fishing with his dad on the river and local creeks. Currently spliting his time between Bozeman guiding on the surrounding Montana rivers and studying Environmental Science at Montana State University as well as Casper where he is returning for his third season on the N. Platte River. Adam is excited to spend a day on the water with you, sharing his knowledge on catching anything with fins and some of the crazy stories that go along with it.

Corey Eskam - Laramie, Wyoming
The slightest tap on the line begins a fly fishing adventure that will create memories that will last a life time.  Corey Eskam, experienced Gray Reef fly fishing guide and avid fly fisherman, understands the excitement generated when you "set the hook".  Corey's experience on the North Platte River will provide numerous opportunities for an unforgettable day on the river.

Colter Anderson - Casper, Wyoming
Colter began stalking the banks at the ripe age of four with his father in Wyoming. His passion sparked his guiding career with the Platte River Fly Shop on the North Platte River in Casper, Wyoming. In 2000 he moved to Bozeman Montana, to attend Montana State University. Since then he has split time guiding/fishing between the Big Sky and Cowboy States.  He has a passion for the waters or west and loves that on any given day you have the chance of catching trout on dry’s, nymphs and streamers.

Fishing has been a part of Colter's life for over twenty years, and he's always excited to teach anglers and show them a few nice fish like this brown on the lower river!

Cass Huber - Casper, Wymoing
I was born and raised just foot steps from the North Platte River, and learned to fish at a young age. As I got older my search for fish broadened from the river banks where I was raised, to the rest of the state, and the world beyond. I've pursued fish all over North America, but always seem to end up right back here on the Platte. Many of my closest friends are guides, which of coarse made me want to follow suit. I live to spend every waking moment on the river in search of large trout, and enjoy sharing these adventures with others.

John Muir - Casper, Wyoming
My name is John Muir. I am married with two beautiful baby boys. I have a career as a full time fireman. With lots of time off and a love for fly fishing, I am lucky enough to guide in my free time. I discovered fly fishing on the North Platte about 15 yrs ago. It all started with a $50 rod and reel, cheap waders and flies I had no idea what would work or not. With a little patience and guidance from good friends and local fly shops; (Platte River Fly Shop). I landed my first rainbow trout. Thus began my quest to catch every trout imaginable on the Platte.

Luke Opitz - Casper, WY
Luke grew up in the outdoors of the west.  If he is not chasing phesants in South Dakota he is chasing trout in Wyoming or Montana.  Luke has been fishing the North Platte River for over 19 years. He has Guided for Platte River Fly Shop since 2005.  He is currently a senior in the petroleum engineering program at The University of Wyoming.  Luke loves the sport of Fly-Fishing and his home waters on the North Platte.
