Being able to see your trailer and traffic behind it is important when towing, but conventional side mirrors often don’t provide enough view area.  Several after-market companies make large mirrors and extensions that rectify this problem.  Some are even power-activated, so can extend them when you need to and retract them when you don’t.  Some of them also feature built-in turning signals.

Sway-Control Devices

Serious trailer sway is dangerous.  Several things can contribute to it, such as improper tongue weight, off-balance loads and inadequate tire pressure.  If after checking these things the problem continues, sway control devices offered by many hitch manufacturers can help you.

Trailer Brakes

Not all trailers are required by law to have brakes, but having them in emergency situations is obviously of great benefit.  Some manufacturers even offer electric brake kits specially made to withstand a water environment.  Also, disc brakes perform better than drum brakes, and there are kits to swap them out.

Transmission-Oil Temperature Gauge

Transmission failure due to overheating is a common risk when towing.  Installing an after-market transmission-oil temperature gauge will help you avoid costly damage.
